The big day has come - lab opening in the Techbase on the World Usability Day (05.12.2018).

Approach

At least two of us supervised the experiment as testers. One person after another had been tested. Before the study, we didn´t tell them what we are going to test, only that they are supposed to play our game. First, they got an introduction on how the game works, that it starts with a trainings mode, in which they can get used to the Pusher and the game as long as they needed. Before starting, they had to sign the privacy statement we prepared for this occasion. One tester started the game and the other one took notes and operated the camera. As in the study before we asked the participants to do thinking aloud during the test.

The highest score of all 16 runs the test consists of have been determined and written on a whiteboard.

Experiment set-up

The experiment set-up was very similar to the tested set-up of the pre-pre-study:

  • Table, two chairs, display
  • Camera (sony alpha 6000), wide-angle lens (sigma f1.4 16mm), tripod
  • Pusher, connected to laptop
  • Whiteboard for writing down highscore

Study Design

As mentioned in the blog entry about the pre-pre-study, we wanted to collect the necessary and important variables. These are the results:

  • dependent: combination: average latency, variance
  • independent: performance (obstacles jumped over, score
  • controlled: influence of alcohol
  • confounding: background noises, a lot of other people

Participants

25 participants in the age from 18 to 62 have been tested. The Germans have a word for everything, also for the term how many persons you have to test in order to get normally distributed data: ‘zentrales Grenzwerttheorem’. For this reason, we will test five more persons.

Problems

After testing participant 13, we had to move from the laboratory to the techbase foyer. In the new experiment set-up, the camera was placed on the right hand side of the tester, due to shortage of space. Another problem was that the camera turned off and for this reason, the last tested person was not filmed.

Results

The results of this study (including the transcripts of the videos will be written down in a seperated blog entry.
