Research question

Does the Video and Audio quality affect the understanding of content in online courses?

Possible answers might be:

  • the Video quality has no effect on the understanding of online courses
  • the Video quality has an effect on the understanding of online courses
  • the Audio quality has an effect on the understanding of online courses
  • the Audio quality has an effect on the understanding of online courses

If the answer is, that video quality has an effect, it might be interesting to know if there are tendencies to how understanding is affected. E.g. better Video quality leads to better content understanding. This might be useful for all teachers or lecturers so they might know how they can improve their lectures and for student to adjust quality settings on their end. It also serves as a basis for further more specific studies. .

Methodology

We plan to hand out a questionnaire to teachers to understand their perspective and capabilites (hardware, software, online lecture specific skills). Based on these aspects we define good and bad setups for video and audio quality. With these setups we will record an online course learning video with four variations (v+a+; v+a-; v-a+; v-a- with v for video, a for audio, + for good and - for bad) and develop a questionnaire about the video content for students. Students will watch the video and answer the questionnaire (after a certain amount of time) in their home schooling environment. .
