Researchquestion

  • Does the SAM provide sufficient feedback for participants to express their -emotions during a typical HCI task.
  • Emotions are complex and not very easy to grasp. At HCI the area of emotions is playing an increasingly important role, because they can have a major impact on the user experience. The SAM questionnaire is a simple and quick method and due to its non-verbal design easy understandable for people of all ages, regardless of ability or education.
  • It could help researchers and designers to understand the users needs and improve the systems they build.

Planned methods

  • Due to the complexity of the topic, final research has not yet been completed. In the next step a preliminary study should first be carried out to test and find a suitable study design to answer the research question.
  • To do so we also need to define one ore more typical HCI tasks, which needs more research at this instance. The SAM should be queried after each task and, in addition, qualitative questions should be used to determine whether the Sam is sufficient to express the emotions of the participants.
  • Another approach is to find a study in the HCI field that identifies emotions and replicates them with the SAM.

Schedule

  • Until 10.12 Completion of research and planning the preliminary study
  • Until 17.12 Complete and evaluate the preliminary study in order to plan further steps
  • Until 07.01 Study design and developing of prototype if needed
  • January Study
  • Evaluating and writing the paper
