Group: I_20/21 Description of the preliminary design of the study. We clarify our research question, the methods used and our preliminary schedule.

preliminary research questions

Which factors have an influence on a reading study at home?

How can these factors be controlled?

Aim of the questions: The study serves as a preparation for the creation of a guide for remote studies and is therefore interesting for everyone who aims to conduct a remote study.

Can a remote study provide similar results to a laboratory study?

Can a remote study replace a laboratory study?

Aim of the questions: We want to offer an alternative to the classical laboratory study.

methods

We want to conduct a synchronous remote reading study. We are planning the main study as an within-subject-design. Since in the preliminary study serious differences between the reading speeds and text comprehension of students and working people over 30 years of age occurred, the study will initially only be carried out with students. A further study will be conducted with a different group of people as a control group in order to validate the results of the main study as well as to find out whether the demographics of the test persons really have an impact on the test results.

schedule

In the first half of December we will work on the exact definition of the study design based on the literature and the results of the first preliminary study. After that we will conduct and evaluate the first pilot study. This will lead to iterative further study designs by refining the study based on the pilot results. Depending on the degree of adaptation of the individual studies, this step will take until the end of December. At the beginning of January the main study should be defined and we will start the two-week test phase. We will then spend the remaining time evaluating the results and writing them down.
